with Jenny O’Leary
on 07 March 2018
The workshop began by looking at some of Jenny’s work to give us an idea of what could be achieved with the techniques. The well-structured day was relaxed with clear teaching and support by Jenny who encouraged us all to experiment. She told us to remember the three rules: wax protects colour, bleach removes it and ink adds colour.
The first task was to cover two pieces of cartridge by gluing crumpled, black tissue on one and torn, coloured tissue on the other. We chalked our design on the black, and cut and glued black tissue shapes on the coloured background. We were ready to batik.
Jenny made the day easy by providing all the equipment and materials we needed and, by the end of the day, we had some surprising results to take home and develop. A really good learning experience.
